Doctor found to help Charlie leave hospital

A High Court judge is set to decide where the terminally-ill baby will end his life after the little boy's parents and hospital bosses became embroiled in a new legal fight

Charlie's mother, Connie Yates sobbed, leaving the courtroom before the judge gave his ruling.

But doctors caring for Charlie at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London say it is not practical to provide life-support treatment to Charlie at the couple's home for days.

The care plan for Charlie must honour his parents wishes about the time and place of his passing, but also be safe, spare Charlie all pain and protect his dignity, the hospital said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The hospital also said that Charlie's ventilator would not fit through the door of his parents' west London home, and that the property's stairs and corners would make it hard to negotiate equipment through and would likely require Charlie to be taken off the ventilator to get inside.

The parents and hospital are still at odds, however, over the detail of Charlie's care plans and were given until Thursday to come to agreement.

Such arrangements will be hard to make, meaning the 11-month-old who has captured the world's attention will likely have his life support removed at a hospice.

The 11-month-old child, widely known as Baby Charlie, will be transferred to a hospice arranged by the hospital if there is no agreement by the deadline, the broadcaster quoted the judge as saying. "The time has come when a decision has to be made, ' he said".

Charlie suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease. They said they accept that his condition has deteriorated to the point where the experimental treatment would not work.

The case has triggered a heated worldwide debate in the press and on social media about who should decide a child's fate, and has drawn comment from US president Donald Trump and pope Francis.

Dr Michio Hirano, an American neurology expert from Columbia Medical, previously said he believed there was at least a 10% chance his NBT therapy could improve Charlie's condition.

"We are now in July and our poor boy has been left to just lie in hospital for months without any treatment whilst lengthy court battles have been fought", the parents' said.

While even several Catholic ethicists remain divided on how to care for Charlie, some secular ethicists like Peter Singer (who consistently argues against the Catholic ethos) have argued positively for this child to receive medical treatment. "I must consider Charlie's best interests".

Bobby Schindler, brother of Terri Schiavo who has been in London assisting the Gard family with their court case, agreed.
