Trump could seek 'tougher' Russian Federation sanctions: White House aide

Sweden plans large joint military exercise with NATO

U.S. President Donald Trump could veto pending legislation which would slap new sanctions on Russian Federation, in order to push for a tougher deal, a top White House aide said on Thursday.

The House of Representatives voted by 419 votes to three on Tuesday to pass the new sanctions bill, which targets Russian Federation as well as North Korea and Iran.

At the same time, the version the House passed with a vote of 419-3 would curb President Trump's authority when it comes to waiving those sanctions. The bill, which includes a provision that allows Congress to stop any effort by U.S. President Donald Trump to ease existing sanctions on Russian Federation, will now be sent to the White House for Trump to sign into law or veto. The bill will now be sent to the White House for Trump to sign into law or veto. It is, however, expected to garner enough support to override a Trump veto.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is pushing for greater cooperation, including military ties, between Russia and China saying it "would bring balance to the world".

Putin further said that the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the United States by the outgoing Obama administration, "the sanctions are illegal in terms of global law".

The Russian strongman criticised the probe into Russian meddling in the USA presidential election, saying that he "does not see this as an investigation". Mr Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

Trump's team has argued it needs flexibility to pursue a more collaborative diplomacy with Russian Federation which, by U.S. intelligence consensus, interfered in last year's presidential election.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has deplored a new round of U.S. sanctions on his country، saying Moscow will definitively respond to the embargos if they are implemented، according to PressTV.

France and Germany have so far spoken out against the bill as it affects European industries while advancing United States commercial interests.

Besides angering Moscow, the proposed legislation has upset the European Union, which has said the new sanctions might affect its energy security and prompt it to act, too.

Putin said on Thursday that Russian Federation had been "restrained and patient" in response to what he said were constant provocations by the United States.

"The administration supports sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea".

The administration has at times demonstrated a willingness to take a tougher tack against Russian Federation via sanctions.

The White House's rhetoric on the sanctions bill echoes that surrounding the president's controversial decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, which includes 194 countries.

"Technologically, this form is practically final", he said. Ryabkov went onto say that the economic sanctions would put the already tenuous relationship between the USA and Russian Federation into "uncharted territory in a political and diplomatic sense" and promised swift retaliation.

Taking a swipe at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, without naming, Putin said Russian Federation and China "are not creating military blocs or military alliances". "It is impossible to put up forever with this boorishness toward our country".
