Bangladesh Claim Historic Test Victory over Australia

Shakib Al Hasan playing his 50th Test alongside Tamim Iqbal scored briskly to arrest Bangladesh's early slide on Day 1

Glenn Maxwell tried to break the shackles by slamming 15 runs, including two boundaries off Shakib but any chances of a counter-attack were snuffed as Bangladesh continued to take wickets regularly.

"I think we made a few errors, a few guys getting out ways they've got out before and not learning from their mistakes, which is really disappointing", Smith said. "We let ourselves down in the first innings and then we did not play well in the second innings".

His back-to-back five-wicket hauls, propped up by his half-century, formed the cornerstone of Bangladesh's fight against the Aussies in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh played an average innings, with veteran opener Tamim Iqbal scoring 71, while Shakib Al Hasan scored a healthy 84 in the opening innings.

The match unravelled for Australia in a disastrous hour before lunch when they lost five wickets after reaching a competitive 3-166. Unbeaten on 75, he has scored almost 70 per cent of his team's runs and done it by blending attack and defence in equal measure.

"England were a strong side and Australia may not have a good record in the subcontinent in the recent past, but they did have their best players in the side".

Shakib also felt it didn't matter if Australia didn't respect them enough coming into the series.

Mushfiqur added that he expected his spinners to step up their game and take some pressure of the leading tweaker Shakib Al Hasan.

Shakib's display with the ball - in his 50th Test - was part of a fruitful day for the hosts as Australia continued to struggle on their travels, the tourists bowled out for 217 in spin-friendly conditions. Smith also was dismissed to a similar delivery which he edged to the wicketkeeper and ended his innings on 37.

Peter Handscomb, who had displayed admirable grit in the series against India, cut a short ball from Taijul but the edge flew to first slip where Soumya Sarkar produced a brilliant reflex catch on the second attempt to give Bangladesh hope.

The 26-year-old sustained the blow earlier in the game and it got worsened as the game progressed and eventually went off the field in the 35th over in the third innings of the game.
