Kvitova knocks Muguruza out of US Open

Kvitova will turn up under the lights 259 days after something nearly bottomlessly grim.

This is the most significant victory for Kvitova since she returned to action after needing surgery on her racket-holding hand for cuts from a knife-wielding intruder at her home in the Czech Republic in December.

"I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive", she announced on social media after.

Battling back after a home-invasion knife attack last December that jeopardized her career, two-time Wimbledon victor Petra Kvitova matched her top US Open performance on Sunday by reaching the quarter-finals. Kvitova beat the sensational Spaniard-recent victor of Wimbledon and Cincinnati-in two sets, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

"What she's gone through is unimaginable, unreasonable. The world we live in is just shocking", said Williams. To be able to come out here and do what she needs to do, to clear her head, it's such a attractive thing to see. "What else can I say except I'm glad to see her back?"

In her entirely different circumstances, Williams will walk out as a marvel.

The 13th-seeded Czech left-hander ousted Spanish third seed and reigning Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to book a Tuesday last-eight date with U.S. ninth seed and seven-time Grand Slam victor Venus Williams. She coped with the immune disorder Sjogren's syndrome, diagnosed in 2011 and known to wreak fatigue.

This time, Sevastova made Sharapova run a lot by pulling her forward with drop shots or tight angles, then would often deposit follow-up strokes into open spaces.

"I'm really enjoying it more than before", she said after the match.

It turned out to be a very nice budding. Her 2017 Grand Slams: final (Australian Open), fourth round (at the French, historically her toughest task), final (Wimbledon) and quarterfinal (here).

But she was able to enter the U.S. Open thanks to a wild card from the U.S. Tennis Association, which then proceeded to put its 2006 champion in Arthur Ashe Stadium every time she played over the past week, drawing strong support from spectators - and criticism from another former No. 1-ranked woman, Caroline Wozniacki.

A smash victor then helped the Spaniard consolidate the break before Kvitova started to find her groove, claiming three straight games to return level having wasted three break points in the sixth game. It's never easy to win a Slam. From 2-3 down, Kvitova rattled off the next five points to clinch the first set after 64 minutes of play.

Kvitova, whose All England crowns came in 2011 and 2014, said after her victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium that her journey back from the attack has been a hard climb.

For a while, Kvitova told of understandable new feelings, and not just the surprise of winning the title in Birmingham, England, at the Wimbledon tuneup. "I was probably rushing a little bit, so I just needed to really try to be a bit more calm and play some rallies". "I struggled a bit from the beginning. I found out what's important and what is not". The 13th seed, who faces Venus Williams next, insisted she would continue to play with no expectations but also without being surprised by what she can still produce.
