Police raid in Cairo kills 10 militants

Roadside bombs kill 5 police in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula

Militants detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, destroying three armoured vehicles and a signal-jamming vehicle.

Egyptian security forces killed 10 suspected militants Sunday in a shootout during a raid on two apartments in central Cairo. The gunmen later opened fire with assault weapons and commandeered a police pick-up truck truck.

Among those killed were two police lieutenants.

At least 26 Egyptian soldiers were killed or wounded on July 7, 2017, in attacks on checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula.

IS claimed it was behind the attack via its news agency Amaq.

The attack took place about 30km west of el-Arish in northern Sinai, the epicenter of a long-running insurgency by militants now led by the extremist Islamic State group.

They said initial enquiries indicate the militants were planning to attack state institutions, the police, the military and the judiciary, and to blow up key installations.

A high-ranking source in the Egyptian Internal Ministry said that police killed nine terrorists in the operation, while five police officers were wounded, the local media reported.

The security forces targeted members of the IS affiliated group Sinai Province who were based in the Ard El Lewaa suburb where they lived as "ordinary citizens", according to the ministry statement.

Egypt has seen a spate of militant attacks mainly targeting security forces since the army's 2013 overthrow of president Mohammed Morsi, a senior official in the Muslim Brotherhood.

Private newspaper al-Masry al-Youm, citing security sources, reported that the slain extremists were from the self-styled Hasm group, which authorities accuse of being the armed wing of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
