Rohingyas pose security threat: Govt to apex court

Supporters for a march towards Myanmar Embassy to protest against the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Dhaka Bangladesh on Monday. Bangladesh has been overwhelmed with more than 400,000 Rohingya who fled their homes in the last three weeks

Government of India told the Supreme Court Monday that Rohingya Muslim refugees pose a serious security threat to the country as it sought to justify moves to deport up to 40,000 of them.

The apex court is hearing a plea against the government's decision to deport the refugees to Myanmar.

Union Home Ministry filed the 15-page affidavit in which it was stated, "As per law, it is completely illegal for Rohingya immigrants to stay in India and has submitted that their continuance in India would have serious national security ramifications and has serious security threats".

"The total number of such illegal immigrants into our country would be more than 40,000 approximately as on date".

Govindacharya, in his plea, said the Rohingya Muslims are a burden on a country's resources and also a serious threat to India's national security. "Whatever the government of India will do, will be in the nation's interest", added Rijiju.

The Indian government told the court that it had intelligence data that showed links between some Rohingya Muslims and Pakistan-based terror groups and other worldwide terror organizations. The Centre further saidin the affidavit that since India is not a signatory to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, 1951, the obligations concerned to non-refoulement is not applicable. As India has accommodated refugees coming from Tibet, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, issue of Rohingyas refugees should also be considered in the same spirit.

Bangladesh Myanmar Attacks

CJI responded, "The court will only go by law and petitioners must now go through the affidavit filed by the government".

The matter is being heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra with other two judges being Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D. Y. Chandrachud. Their petition says that the Centre's plan to deport them violated global conventions.

Party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said by definition all refugees are "illegal" until the respective state grants them "refugee status" and allow them to stay. NHRC had strongly supported the Rohingya Muslims.

In a written submission to the country's Supreme Court, the Indian government claimed that the Rohingya Muslims, who fled violence in Myanmar and settled in India, are "indulging in anti-national activities and channelizing funds through havala (illegal) channels".

NHRC issues notice to the Centre over its plan to deport the Rohingya immigrants, residing in various parts of India.

They claimed that they have taken refuge in India after escaping from Myanmar due to widespread discrimination, violence and bloodshed against the community there.
