Uber CEO Apologizes After London Ban

TfL made an announcement that it will not renew the license of the US based ride-hailing service in London on September 22, 2017.

The popular app, used by 3.5 million Londoners, failed to gain its licence on four grounds - including failures to report sexual assaults on passengers by drivers.

Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Labour politician who has criticised the firm in the past, said on Monday he had asked Transport for London (TfL) to be available to meet CEO Khosrowshahi.

In a letter published by London's Evening Standard newspaper, Khosrowshahi said Uber "has got things wrong along the way" as it expanded.

On Friday, Transport for London, the government body that oversees the city's transportation, announced that it wouldn't renew Uber's license to operate in the city beyond September 30 due to its "lack of corporate responsibility" related to safety and security. "On behalf of everyone at Uber globally, I apologise for the mistakes we've made".

A spokesman for Uber said around 20,000 Uber drivers had emailed the city's mayor directly to object to the decision.

It worked in Chicago as recently as a year ago, where Alderman Anthony Beale, who fought unsuccessfully to more tightly regulate Uber, said the company used Uber riders and political connections to win - at least so far - a fight over fingerprint background checks of drivers.

It also comes after an Uber-initiated online petition in response to the possible ban that calls for a reversal of TfL's decision; the petition has racked up over 750,000 signatures so far.

Uber drivers like James Farrar, the chairman of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain's United Private Hire Drivers branch, wondered how they would pay their bills.

The TfL said Uber poses risks to public safety and criticized the company's approach to reporting serious criminal offenses and conducting background checks.

According to the BBC, Khan welcomed Khosrowshahi's apology. In cities that have been created to be more spread out such as Houston as opposed to cities more condensed such as New York City, apps such as Uber and Lyft couldn't be any more useful.

Now, as brand-new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi deals with a stunning rebuke from London, the playbook gets another page: fight, but offer some diplomatic humility.

Taxi firm Uber is likely to remain on London roads for more than a year despite being banned by Transport for London bigwigs. Since then it has gone global, operating in more than 630 cities worldwide.

The taxis licenses themselves - licensing is controlled, limited in number, and therefore worth a lot - have plummeted in worth since Uber first hit Sydney streets:worth $406,000 in October, 2012, the month before Uber entered the market, they are now worth only $200,000.

The initial background checks were carried out by a third party but TfL deemed them inadequate following a review.
