Twitter called to Capitol Hill to give details on Russian election interference

Russians targeted race and other divisive issues with Facebook political ads

At a committee briefing, Twitter executives gave Congress their analysis of how the social media platform may have been exploited by the Russian government in the run up to the election in 2016.

"We've been fighting against these issues for years, and as long as there are people trying to manipulate Twitter, we will be working hard to stop them", the company said.

The company says in a blog post that RT spent $274,100 on ads targeted to markets in the U.S.in 2016.

Facebook revealed this month that suspected Russian trolls purchased more than $1,00,000 worth of divisive ads on its platform during the 2016 election cycle, a revelation that has prompted calls from some Democrats for new disclosure rules for online political ads.

"This is an ongoing process and we will continue to collaborate with investigators", the statement said.

Twitter has identified and blocked 201 suspected Russian-linked accounts connected to the spreading of false information in last year's United States presidential election, the social network said Thursday.

"Internally, we already have stricter policies for advertising campaigns on Twitter than we do for organic content".

The micro-blogging site, which also identified Russia Today of buying ads targeted at American users' accounts, said that it would cooperate with congressional committees with respect to investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

Twitter representatives met with congressional Russian Federation investigators in a closed meeting on Thursday.

"Just as all the usual media organisations in the world do", Ms Margarita Simonyan was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

Twitter added that it found another 179 associated accounts, but none was registered as an advertiser.

Twitter, on the other hand, has shown to have multiple easily faked accounts and news items that allowed influencing of the public by alleged Russian operatives. Twitter did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Mark Warner, called the meeting "inadequate on nearly every level".

Warner said the platform needs to do a lot more in this regard, given that Twitter's presentation hardly answers the types of questions that the Senate committee has asked, notes the Financial Times.

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Google executives will next attend a November 1 public hearing by both congressional committees to further examine Russian use of the social media platforms in the 2016 campaign.
