Pak to face 'repercussions' for not re-arresting 'global terrorist' Saeed

Immediately after release JuD chief Hafiz Saeed launched his anti India rhetoric and vowed to mobilise people for the ‘cause of Kashmir

Pakistan has justified the release of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed, accused of by India and the United States of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai massacre, by claiming that Islamabad remains committed to the implementation of UNSC sanctions regime on terrorists and has taken several steps in this regard.

The US and the United Nations classify Saeed's JuD as a terrorist group and it is alleged to be a front organization for LeT, whose attack on Mumbai led to the death of 166 Indians and foreigners.

"He was not only the mastermind, he was the prime organizer of the Mumbai terror attacks in which many innocent Indians and many people from other nationalities were killed", spokesman Raveesh Kumar said in a statement.

But on Friday Pakistani authorities released him after a court rejected a provincial government request to renew his detention for another 90 days.

Instead, Mr Saeed has spent much of the last decade being placed under house arrest and then released.

The Spokesperson said that the Pakistani government should make sure that he is arrested and charged for his crimes.

It also called Saeed a "notorious terrorist" and pointed out that "a clear worldwide consensus" exists regarding Saeed's culpability - he was designated by the United Nations under UN Security Council Resolution 1267 in December 2008 and the Department of the Treasury has designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

The statement Saeed made after his release in Lahore was a "re-articulation of the agenda of terrorist constituency", a Home Ministry official here said.

"I'm happy that no allegation against me was proved", Saeed told supporters after his release in the city of Lahore, according to a video released by the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) Islamist charity, which he heads. The Justice Department has a $10 million bounty out for his capture.

In October, the board had agreed to extend the house arrest of Saeed, which was about to end next week. India and the U.S. said there was sufficient evidence, though this was something prosecutors in Pakistan denied.

While some in Pakistan may wish to see Mr Saeed placed on trial, there is widespread suspicion among Indian and U.S. officials that he still retains close links to the country's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), which has been long blamed for sponsoring numerous cross-border attacks on Indian targets.

Saeed said he was detained when he announced a month of solidarity for Kashmiris this January.

"Nawaz Sharif asks why he was ousted?"

For years, the Pakistanis have been blamed by the USA for not doing enough in their counterterrorism efforts to end the Afghan war - the longest military engagement in America's history.
