After 30 years in US, Michigan dad deported to Mexico

This Family's Heartbreaking Story Reveals the True Human Consequences of Trump's DACA Fight

A petition launched on MoveOn.org, titled "Help Jorge Garcia return to his family in Lincoln Park!" now sits at more than 3,000 signatures.

Authorities told Cindy Garcia that her husband would not be allowed to return, a move that has left the family "broken", said Mayra Valle, a family friend at the airport, per The Detroit News.

"We've never done anything without permission from immigration, because anytime you leave the city, you have to tell them where you are going", she said.

The family had originally hoped for a new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) law that would make him eligible to remain in the country.

Mr Garcia's case is not one that could have been helped by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program that is aimed at helping immigrants who came to the United States and is now in peril - he is too old for the parameters of that program - but he did see some level of mercy from the administration of President Barack Obama. The landscaper now has two children and a wife, all of whom are US citizens. They have been working on finding him a path to citizenship for the last 13 years.

According to CNN, Garcia was facing a removal order since 2009, but he received an extension under the Obama administration. He had arrived one year before he was able to qualify for DACA.

"It's like any minute now he's going to walk through the door, but he's not, he's in Mexico", said Cindy Garcia.

Cindy said agents said because Jorge doesn't have a criminal record, he could stay through the Christmas holiday. Other immigrant advocates and an official with the United Auto Workers joined him at the airport.

Garcia may be barred from entering the USA for at least 10 years, said Cindy Garcia. "... It's going to be kind of hard for me to adjust, too". Diego Bonesatti, legal services director for Michigan United, and others have been fighting for Garcia for years and now will try to get him back.

Cindy Garcia said she and her husband have been working since 2005 to help Jorge Garcia become a legal citizen. Immigrants like Garcia are an asset that stabilize and grow metro Detroit, they said.

"They knew we were trying to fix his status", Ms. Garcia said. "He's never even gotten a traffic ticket". "Day?" asked Erik Shelley, a leader with the activist group Michigan United, the Free Press reports.

Cindy Garcia, a retired Dearborn truck plant worker, worries about supporting her family without her husband.
