Democracy activist in HK gets another jail term

Freedom in the World 2018

Hong Kong: Democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to three months in prison on Wednesday for his role in a protest in 2014 demanding freer elections for the leader of this semiautonomous Chinese territory.

"They can lock up our bodies but they can't lock up our minds", he told reporters.

Wong had pleaded guilty past year for failing to comply with a court order to clear out of a protest camp during the 79-day gathering in the semiautonomous Chinese city.

Wong, 21, who became the face of the 2014 Umbrella Movement, was handed a three-month sentence on a contempt charge for obstructing clearance of a major protest encampment, to which he pleaded guilty.

Leaders of the 79-day civil disobedience movement rejected a August 31, 2014 decree from China's parliament, the National People's Congress (NPC), which required the vetting of candidates for the city's top job by a pro-Beijing committee, as "fake universal suffrage".

A Hong Kong court has jailed activist Joshua Wong for the second time over his role in the country's pro-democracy "Umbrella Movement" protests.

Both Wongs will file for appeal after the court denied their applications for stay of execution, according to Nathan Law, who like Joshua is a member of the political group Demosisto.

Several others involved in the 2014 demonstrations received suspended sentences, according to the South China Morning Post, with the sentences ranging in length from one to two months.

"A few months' jail term has a limited impact on these secessionists, and the judge also can't prevent more youths from following these activists", he said. "Our determination to fight for genuine universal suffrage will not waver".

The name of the movement arose from the use of umbrellas as a tool for peaceful resistance to the Hong Kong police during the protests.

They failed to win concessions and since then leading activists have been charged over their involvement.

Hong Kong was promised a "high degree of autonomy" under the terms of its 1997 handover from Britain to China, but many say the city's traditional freedoms are now a thing of the past, as Beijing seeks to wield ever greater influence over the city's media, publishing, and political scene.

He is already on bail pending an appeal over a six-month sentence for another protest-related offence.
