Trump to tell Erdogan of concern over Syria offensive

Turkish army tanks near the Syrian border on Sunday

The White House says Trump expressed concerns about the growing violence and told Erdogan it jeopardizes shared U.S.

She stressed that "anything less is unacceptable". Moscow is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's most powerful ally.

He circulated a draft resolution to the Security Council Tuesday to establish the United Nations Independent Mechanism of Investigation or UNIMI.

Syria has dismissed recent reports of chemical attacks in the war-torn country as "lies". The Syrian government denies using chemical weapons.

He also said the SDF had killed tens of Turkish forces and allied Free Syrian Army fighters, but said he did not have a precise figure.

It said the two leaders "emphasized the importance of continuing active joint work to settle the crisis, which should be based on preserving Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity".

"It's a fact that United States forces are seriously involved in creating alternative government bodies in a vast part of the Syrian territory", Lavrov said.

Russia's official statement on the offensive said it was concerned by the news.

Officially, Washington says its alliance with Ankara remains strong and necessary, and it's working with Turkey to address legitimate security concerns and return the focus to defeating ISIS.

Asked whether he believes the Indonesian special forces units have reformed sufficiently to merit resuming USA military cooperation, Mattis said, "Yes", adding that the Pentagon will follow established procedures for further easing its restrictions.

Turkey's attacks on Kurdish-controlled areas of Syria are stripping bare deep tensions with the United States and are sure to be a topic of discussion in a call between President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that's set for Wednesday. The U.S. -backed Syrian Democratic Forces - comprised largely of Kurdish fighters - helped.

But analysts say a crucial question will be whether Turkey limits the campaign to the Afrin region or extends it to the YPG held-town of Manbij or other areas to the east. Critical is the opinion of Russian Federation, which has a military presence in the area and a cordial relationship with the YPG but is also working with Turkey to bring an end to the seven-year Syrian civil war.

The flashpoint is a town in northern Syria called Manbij, occupied by the Syrian Kurds and their USA military advisers.

"People are dying because of this and they're turning their backs on us", she said.

Presidential spokesperson İbrahim Kalın criticized European High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini's for her remarks on Operation Olive Branch in Afrin, Syria, saying it exposed the double standards against Turkey's counterterrorism efforts.

First Sgt. Musa Ozalkan, who was killed Monday, was laid to rest in Ankara on Tuesday.

Meanwhile President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has attended the funeral of one of two Turkish soldiers killed in fighting.

Turkey's price, therefore, for supporting the process was dropping the Kurds, Tahiroglu believes, and Russian Federation gave the green light for the Afrin operation after striking a deal. They are accused of supporting a Syrian Kurdish militant group through social media posts.

Another fighter, 34-year-old Massoud Baravi, and many of his comrades fear Turkey will be emboldened to attack Kurdish areas east of the Euphrates, where the YPG has routed the Islamic State group. A military operation codenamed Olive Branch was launched last week to clear YPG from Afrin.

Local health official Hani Belras Ali said at least 27 people died had died so far and 32 were wounded.

Prosecutors may demand that the detained be put under pre-trial arrest or release them.

The initiative was announced Tuesday in Paris, where U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and diplomats from the other signatory countries.

On Jan. 21, Mattis said Turkey, a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, had alerted the United States ahead of the attack.

Le Drian urged world powers to work together toward a political solution in Syria to so that other simmering conflicts don't explode with the retreat of IS extremists, warning those conflicts could be "just as dramatic".

Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels so far appear to have made limited gains since the air and ground offensive began on Saturday.

"Now Turkish planes are bombarding Afrin, killing women and children on the pretext that we're separatists, but we're part of Syria!"

There were no reported casualties.
