Tourists reminded to save water in Cape

Panic and blame as Cape Town braces for water shut-off

Cape Town residents may lose piped water to their homes within two months if they do not act to counter the effects of the worst drought to hit South Africa's second city in nearly a century.

Tourists traveling to Cape Town these days may have to select between experiencing one of the most handsome towns in the world or taking a shower. The latest estimate for this unprecedented event is April 12.

Residents have been urged to keep track of water usage by making use of the water dashboard on the City's website. However‚ if the water flow in the system is reduced too sharply‚ there is a risk of blockages and raw sewage leaks.

On 1 February, even stricter water restrictions come into force, limiting the maximum use per person to 50 litres a day, down from 87 litres.

The Democratic Alliance, South Africa's main opposition party, runs both Cape Town and Western Cape province.

The minister said critics like Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and DA leader Mmusi Maimane were trying to absolve themselves of their responsibilities in the management of the water crisis.

Mokonyane will over the next few days hold meetings with stakeholders to assess the interventions necessary to avert Day Zero, which has been moved forward to April 12.

"It is quite unbelievable that a majority of people do not seem to care and are sending all of us headlong towards Day Zero".

On Monday, Zille said that she had written to President Jacob Zuma, asking for a national disaster to be declared after the likelihood of Day Zero was confirmed by the City of Cape Town. A single flush of a toilet uses around 15 litres.

Around two million tourists flock to Cape Town every year to bathe on its sandy white beaches, explore its natural landmarks like Table Mountain or to drink wine at the dozens of nearby vineyards.

Western Cape police management has presented a security plan once day zero arrives for Cape Town.

"Nobody knows what to expect".

"People are reusing some of the water that they've used in other areas and finding other uses for it around the household", Pumza Fihlani, a BBC correspondent in Johannesburg, said in an interview with Robin Young from Here & Now.
