CIA Director: China Has More Potential to Harm US

CIA Director Mike Pompeo says he has "every expectation" that Russian Federation will try to disrupt midterm elections in November after USA intelligence uncovered interference in 2016.

Mike Pompeo said the Chinese had a much "bigger footprint" to do so than the Russians.

"We deliver almost every day, personally, to the president the most exquisite truth we know from the Central Intelligence Agency", he said. He said the nations could launch a collective mission to combat China's efforts to increase influence over the West. Pompeo said the efforts at stealing information, infiltrating the schools, government and medical facilities by the Chinese can be seen not only in the United States but also in Europe and the United Kingdom.

But officials did not know at the time whether to blame a mole or data hack.

Pompeo cited China's alleged efforts to steal USA commercial information and "infiltration of schools and hospitals" as evidence for his claims that Beijing posed as much of a danger as Moscow.

Pompeo also told the that, despite some cooperation on anti-terrorism efforts, he views Russian Federation as an adversary, stressing that they are still trying to influence the U.S. and Europe. "He is curious in the sense he wants to understand why we believe them".

Mr Pompeo said Chinese attempts to exert influence ranged from human and cyber espionage to the alleged theft of stolen intellectual property to help its businesses.

"Asked if his concerns extended to the upcoming USA mid-term elections in November, Pompeo told the BBC: "Of course".

Speaking on Iranian influence on the Syrian conflict Pompeo said the United States is going to push back the Iranians from every place in every way they can.

"I have every expectation that they will continue to try and do that", Pompeo said.

Despite this, he told the BBC he was "confident that America will be able to have a free and fair election".

In the interview, Pompeo also repeated his message that North Korea was close to developing missiles which could be used in a nuclear attack on the United States.

"While President Trump stands practically idle, Mr. Putin continues to refine his asymmetric arsenal and look for future opportunities to disrupt governance and erode support for the democratic and global institutions that the United States and Europe have built over the last 70 years".

Asked if US President Donald Trump's use of the Twitter social media service posed any national security issues, he said: "Hasn't caused us any trouble".
