DOJ, SEC Launch Investigation into Apple's iPhone Battery Fix

Tim Cook

After it was discovered Apple is purposely slowing down older iPhone's due to poor battery performance, the company has found itself in the middle of a controversy that doesn't seem like it will go away anytime soon.

The DOJ and SEC investigation is in its early stages, according to Bloomberg, and is looking into whether or not Apple violated laws related to disclosing information about the update.

The company reiterated that it would never do anything to intentionally shorten the life of a user's Apple product or "degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades". That led to a huge internet freakout and accusations that Apple has been hobbling iPhones to trick users into buying new models.

In December, Apple issued an apology for slowing older models and said it would discount replacement batteries for some handsets. In the past few months alone, Apple has been dealing with flaws in their software that allowed people to access data without a password on Mac computers, other software bugs as well as the infamous Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities that as we all know, affected many other big companies.

It's been known for a while know that Apple, do in fact, push out updates which primarily slow non-current iPhone models to a almost unusable speed.

Apple also faces a slew of lawsuits in the United States and Russian Federation that allege the company aimed to encourage sales of newer models by letting consumers think their slowing handsets needed replacing, rather than just the battery.

"Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love", said Apple.

BMO Capital Markets lowered its rating for Apple shares to market perform from outperform on Wednesday, predicting weaker-than-expected sales for the company's March quarter. Full disclosure is also the best policy and it sounds like Apple has a long way to go with slowdown related investigations and lawsuits. Some of the key features that are said to be no-show in iOS 12 include updates to the Mail app, improvements in the Camera app, new features for photo-editing and sharing.

The Cupertino tech giant announced in December that all out-of-warranty battery replacements for iPhones as old as iPhone 6 can be replaced for only $29 until December 2018.

"Even if Apple's actions were indeed only meant to avoid unexpected shutdowns in older phones, the large volume of consumer criticism leveled against the company in light of its admission suggests that there should have been better transparency with respect to these practices", Thune wrote in a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
