Donald Trump calls NFL player Edwin Jackson's death 'disgraceful'

Colts' Edwin Jackson killed by driver illegally in US

The illegal immigrant suspected in the drunk driving death of an Indianapolis Colts player and Uber driver was convicted previous year under an alias, in prosecutors said Tuesday.

Guatemalan national Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, remained jailed Tuesday and had not been formally charged in the Sunday crash that killed the Colts' Edwin Jackson and driver Jeffrey Monroe. He also has numerous other misdemeanor convictions and arrests in California and in, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nicole Alberico.

Rick Callahan of the Associated Press reported the Guatemala native, who was living in the United States illegally, faces counts that include causing death while driving intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident as the suspect in a drunk-driving crash. Orrego-Salva has been in the country illegally and had been deported twice, in 2007 and 2009, according to authorities.

Before the crash on Sunday morning, Monroe had pulled his 2018 Lincoln to the side of Interstate 70 in Indianapolis because Jackson had become ill, according to state police.

Jackson started in eight games with the Colts in 2016.

He is now being held in the Marion County (Indiana) jail, and police are working with U.S. federal immigration officials to determine their next step. He appeared in court Wednesday for an initial hearing. Collectively, Orrego-Savala is facing well-over a decade in prison if he is convicted.

"The defendant in this case allegedly re-entered the country illegally for the second time before he put the public safety of Indianapolis at risk and took the lives of two innocent men early Sunday morning", said Josh J. Minkler, a USA attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. He faces up to 10 years in prison on the immigration charge, which the USA attorney's office said would be handled after any state charges are resolved.

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday: "So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed @Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson".

The judge set his bond at $200,000 after entering a not guilty plea on his behalf, and charged him with four felonies. Both men got out of the vehicle and were struck by the pickup.

"This was a completely preventable tragedy", he told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

Mr Orrego-Savala was driving the truck that struck and killed Jackson and ride-sharing operator Jeffrey Monroe. Monroe and Jackson were pronounced dead at the scene.

Tuesday that a year ago Orrego-Savala, under the name Alex Cabrera-Gonsales, had been charged with and pleaded guilty to driving without ever having received a license.

A spokesman for Jackson's family has said his relatives are devastated and planned no response to Mr. Trump's tweets about the crash and the suspect's immigration status. The team's head football coach, Chad Lunsford, said in a statement that Jackson represented "how a young man should live his life".

Police said Orrego-Savala was the driver of the F-150.
