Venezuela opposition weighs election run after talks end

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced Wednesday the holding of early presidential elections on April 22, in which president Nicolas Maduro assures he will win reelection until 2025, with or without opposition, reported dpa news.

The announcement comes hours after a breakdown in negotiations between Venezuela's ruling socialist party and opposition politicians.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro will be running for re-election as the candidate of Venezuela's United Socialist Party (PSUV).

But talks between the bitter foes crumbled on Wednesday.

Medina said the opposition coalition Democratic Unity Roundtable, known by its Spanish acronym MUD, was asking elections be held in June, while the government requested they take place in March.

The former bus driver and union leader who has been president since 2013 appeared on Wednesday evening in front of a cheering crowd, who sang his campaign jingle, "Everyone with Maduro!"

Venezuelan government representatives have accused the United States of attempting to "sabotage" the talks, claiming that the opposition was receiving instructions from the USA administration. Meanwhile, analyst Gustavo Espinoza rejected the campaign of media manipulation against the Bolivarian process and against Maduro, who, he said, will come to defend the sovereignty of his country and the region and condemn the arrogance of the USA government.

The accords confirm general elections on April, 22 and a temporary truth commission to look into possible recent human rights violations in the country.

There was no immediate comment from the opposition. Maduro also reiterated that the country will hold the elections "with or without" the participation of the right-wing opposition, which boycotted the elections a year ago to elect the members of the ANC.

Medina said Maduro had expressed "the desire to continue dialogue", but the opposition delegation "did not understand" that the signing of the final peace agreement would take place on Tuesday in front of worldwide observers. Others feel they have to keep up pressure by voting, while for some emigration is the preferred option.
