Winter Olympics: Teenager Red Gerard wins first United States medal

The Olympics might miss Sage Kotsenburg but the Park City snowboarder isn’t exactly missing them

The first USA gold medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics was won by 17-year-old Red Gerard, who went from last place to first place on his final run to win the men's snowboard slopestyle final.

The 17-year-older from OH won the gold medal in slopestyle snowboarding. Now, he's the first member of the U.S. Olympic Team to take home a gold medal after stomping the final two jumps on his third and final trip down the course to move into first place.

Gerard shook Bach's hand, said nice to meet you, and trotted back toward the finish area where the three men who were supposed to beat him took the final three runs of the competition.

Parrot wound up taking silver in the vent, while Mark McMorris, another Canadian, took bronze, Canada's first two medals of the event. He chose off-path features on the rail and jump sections that others ignored.

Gerard's road to the Olympics started in his backyard.

Early in the day, riders struggled with visibility issues and high, inconsistent winds, as well as bitter cold temperatures, but the sun broke through and the winds calmed before the second heat.

'I think we got a break in the third run, which was really nice, but the first two runs were pretty hard'.

Eleven months ago Mark McMorris was fighting for his life after breaking 17 bones and suffering a collapsed lung and ruptured spleen in a snowboarding accident.

The U.S.is finally on the board in PyeongChang, and it's thanks to a 17-year-old.

His medal came on an eventful day after an natural disaster triggered an alert, winds disrupted events and a fire warning was issued on a day of more sub-zero cold that left athletes and spectators shivering.

"I'm sure it's a ton", Gerard said at a press conference. Parrot finished one point shy of Gerard's final score.

"Once I found out that I at least got third, I mean - that's next level".

"I just didn't think I knew what the Olympics is (as a kid)", Gerard said.

Meanwhile, Perrine Laffont became the first Frenchwoman to win the Olympic moguls title with victory in Pyeongchang. "I can't believe it", Gerard told USA Today. I don't want to have them come all this way for me and not land a run.

In her Olympic debut, 20-year-old Bradie Tennell placed fifth in the ladies single skating short program, adding six points to the team's score.
