Canada leads team figure skating after ice dance

The United States is in good position to capture its first medal in figure skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Sunday in the U.S. (Monday in Pyeongchang, South Korea).

Patrick Chan, Gabrielle Daleman and ice dance dynamos Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will skate for Canada.

Canada won gold with 73 points, well ahead of Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation (66), and the Americans (62).

The duo now have four medals each which ties the record for most Olympic medals won by a figure skater.

The lift sees Virtue come out of an up-thrust with her legs hooked around Moir's shoulders while clasping her hands behind the back of his head.

Though they altered their dance slightly, the pair still raced to their second gold medal in the Winter Olympics after claiming the top gong in the ice dancing event in 2010.

Mikaël Kingsbury earned the title of Olympic moguls champion at PyeongChang 2018, scooping up a gold medal early Monday morning. All they needed was a last place in the free dance segment for Team Canada to win.

The name of the game in the team event is strategy.

Ten nations have qualified for the team competition, and each will send out skaters in each of the four disciplines in the short program.

"Of course I was nervous, I didn't want to let my team down. We really wanted to make sure we got this gold". Each team is composed of one man, one woman, and one pair, who will complete a short program, and one ice dance couple who will complete a short dance. "We recognize that. But what we do realize - and I think I learned this from Evgeni Plushenko actually - is a lot of things have to go right".

Moir and Virtue helped lead Canada to the gold medal in the Olympic Team Event.

Olympic Athlete from Russia Mikhail Kolyada finished second. "What we have is such a cool relationship", said Moir. "When I talked to them in the summer I never had one of them say 'maybe I'll just do one part.' They were all in". "I'm sorry, that's how I'm going to see it, that's how I'm going to enjoy it, and that's for me to decide". "So we wanted to change it, make it a little bit better", Moir told reporters. Instead, skating to Jeff Buckley's haunting "Hallelujah" the 27-year-old from Toronto laid down a performance that all but clinched gold for the Canadians, landing two huge quadruple jumps en route to earning a first-place score of 179.75 points.

"Yes, I'm questioning that too", she said of the dropping levels. As of Monday at 3:30 p.m., Germany leads the overall competition with three gold medals and one bronze, followed by the Netherlands with two gold, two silver and one bronze and the USA with two gold, one silver and one bronze.
