Israel graft case turns spotlight on Netanyahu family

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks in Tel Aviv Israel

There were speculations that Israel Police pushed to get the recommendations out as soon as possible in order to avoid further delay tactics, such as the petition filed by attorney Yossi Fuchs to the Supreme Court, which essentially argued that police should not publish a recommendation in cases where the prime minister is a suspect. The protestors carried placards reading signs saying "crooks go home" and 'crime minister.' A poll published on Wednesday showed nearly half of Israel's electorate believe the police rather than Netanyahu. The police have been investigating the prime minister and certain of his closest associates for well over a year now and they have been anything but circumspect as they go about their work.

Netanyahu, while not denying numerous facts, denied any wrongdoing and vowed to fight on, saying that no police recommendation would prompt his resignation.

Two months after Trump upended decades of United States policy by recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel - endearing himself to Netanyahu while alienating the Palestinian leadership - the USA president told a right-wing Israeli newspaper he was concerned about the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and questioned Israel's willingness to make peace. According to the report, the State Attorney slammed the police for putting it in an impossible situation by "blowing up the balloon of their recommendations to its fullest, and now any stepping back from them will seem as a collapse".

Mr. Netanyahu is separately alleged to have asked Arnon Mozes, the publisher of Israel's best-selling newspaper - the Yediot Ahronot daily - for positive coverage in exchange for promoting legislation that would weaken a free newspaper that had cut into Yediot's business.

This week we have learned that there is solid evidence that Bibi has engaged in bribery, fraud, and breach of the public trust. "He can not be any longer the prime minister of Israel".

Police said that an evidentiary basis had been formed against Milchan and Mozes for giving bribes.

Following Tuesday's announcement by police, Milchan's lawyer said the police recommendation "ignored basic facts", including that Netanyahu and Milchan have been friends since the 2000s, when Netanyahu was not in government. No one, not I and no one else, plans to go to elections.

During his tenure as prime minister, some 15 investigations have been opened against Netanyahu to "topple me from power", he said.

Some lawmakers in the premier's conservative Likud party have said Netanyahu should not resign even if indicted. "The reports in the media of a "partnership with Arnon Milchan" and the claim of "a huge profit" are both factually incorrect and appear to be motivated", a statement from Tata's office said.

Israelis were split between 45 percent and 50 percent saying Netanyahu should either resign or temporarily step aside, while between 40 percent and 43 percent think he should stay. This statement was strongly denied by the White House.

Many are saying that if an indictment is brought against the Prime Minister, he should resign immediately.
