Canadian Olympic athlete detained after alleged drunken auto theft

A Canadian ski cross racer, his wife and coach were busted for allegedly getting drunk and stealing a vehicle to get back to the Olympic Village on Saturday, Korean authorities said. The only one to have a 35-year-old is Dave Duncan. They have been banned from leaving South Korea, but the police says that they could be released if they pay a fine.

Worldwide crime officials at the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency reported that if the alleged offenses are charged as serious crimes, the three would be forced to remain in the country pending trial, according to Reuters.

A South Korean police source told CNN that Raine, the driver, had a blood alcohol level of 0.162 when tested one hour after stealing the vehicle.

All three Canadians were arrested for vehicle theft, with Raine also charged with drunken driving, according to the police source.

Duncan finished eighth in ski-cross in Pyeonchang earlier on Wednesday. He is a two-time X-Games medalist in the discipline.

There were only four Canadian men competing in skicross at the Olympics. Raine is a former Olympic Alpine skier, who competed for Canada at the 1992 Albertville Games but did not medal.

The Canadian Olympic Committee sent apologies from the three on Saturday.

Raine, who was allegedly driving the SUV, was fined 5million South Korean won ($4,600) for driving under the influence and theft.

William Ryan Raine, the ski cross high-performance director, called his actions "inexcusable" and apologized to the owner of the involved vehicle in his statement. "We engaged in behavior that demonstrated poor judgment and was not up to the standards expected of us as members of the Canadian Olympic Team or as Canadians", the Duncans said in a statement.

"I have let my teammates, friends and my family down". "We have confirmation that individuals attached to our team were involved in the investigation and they're cooperating".

"Until we know the results of the investigation, we will be unable to provide further details at this time", said COO Chief Executive Officer Chris Overholt via Arash Madani.
