Israel's Netanyahu visits Trump at White House

Police question Netanyahus under caution in graft case

In their first meeting since President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lavished praise on the American leader, saying that his decision will be one to remember "through the ages".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with President Donald Trump on March 5, 2018.

Trump's decision a year ago to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital pleased Netanyahu's government and the president's attendance at the embassy opening would be a significant gesture.

Trump told reporters he may visit Israel for the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem on Israel's 70th Independence Day. We're as close now as maybe ever before.

Hefetz is alleged to have acted as a messenger between Netanyahu, Elovitch's telecoms group Bezeq and news website Walla!, media reports say.

Trump and Netanyahu were expected to discuss Iran's growing influence in Syria and the USA nuclear deal brokered by former President Obama at Monday's meeting.

A lot is on the table for the two leaders, most importantly, Iran's growing influence in the Middle East.

Elovitch is suspected of giving and receiving bribes and illicit favors worth "up to a billion shekels" - more than one-quarter of a billion U.S. dollars - prosecutor Yehudit Tirosh of the Israel Securities Authority said last week during a hearing.

"Iran has not given up its nuclear ambitions", he said. I said, 'A billion?

"If I can, I will", Trump added, "Israel is very special to me, special country, special people".

The meeting takes place at a challenging time for Trump and Netanyahu. "That is our common challenge", said Netanyahu. White House officials said it was unlikely those issues would arise during talks with Trump.

"If we don't come up with a strategy against Iran we're going to make Israel go to war here pretty soon with the Hezbollah elements in southern Lebanon", said Sen.

Trump's December 6 Jerusalem declaration outraged Palestinians and broke with decades of global consensus that the disputed city's status must be negotiated between the two sides.

U.S. officials have told Reuters it would deal with all major issues, including Jerusalem, borders, security and the future of Israeli settlements and Palestinian refugees, and would also urge Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states to provide significant financial support to the Palestinians.

If I had to say what is our greatest challenge in the Middle East to both our countries, to our Arab neighbors, it's encapsulated in one word: "Iran", he said.

Jared Kushner, who Trump put in charge of handling negotiating Middle East peace, but who recently had his security clearance downgraded to "secret", attended the meeting with Trump and Netanyahu, according to a White House official. "So we're working very hard on it".
