Fertility clinic disaster may have destroyed thousands of frozen eggs, embryos

UH Fertility Clinic investigating failure involving eggs and embryos

Heartbreak for hundreds of families has followed the revelation that a refrigerator malfunction last weekend at Cleveland's University Hospitals' fertility clinics compromised thousands of embryos.

Between the overnight hours Saturday to Sunday, one of the egg and embryo liquid nitrogen storage tanks began warming up. Per a University Hospitals statement cited by News 5 Cleveland, the facility has "initiated contact with all of our patients", and a call center has been set up so patients can set up meetings with doctors.

All of the eggs and embryos have been moved to a working tank, with the hospital asserting that it won't destroy any of them. An American Society for Reproductive Medicine rep says nothing like this has ever happened at a United States fertility clinic.

It is exacerbated by the fact that the only way to determine if the specimens are viable is to thaw them, Liu told the Plain Dealer.

The failure caused the temperature to rise, ultimately making the eggs and embryos at the facility lose their viability. There has been a temperature fluctuation that may have damaged the stored eggs they said. They said in a statement, "Right now, our patients come first".

"We will work with the patient one on one to understand her needs, understand how we might be able to offer some other avenue for her to achieve fertility, it may not be the exact thing that she had planned but we as physicians will work with the patient one on one and arrive at hopefully a way to help that individual", Dr. Liu said. The line is staffed by nurse professionals from 7 a.m.to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

In comments underneath the video message, people expressed frustration and heartbreak at the potential loss of the embryos and eggs, which represented not only a significant financial and medical commitment, but the hope of expanding families. According to the latest figures from the ARSM, more than 6,200 women froze their eggs in 2015.

Eggs are frozen in order to postpone pregnancy. The numbers since then have only risen. Sean Tipton, chief policy officer at ASRM expressed his sympathy for the affected families and said the organization would look into the matter ensuring this is not repeated.
