Palestinian teenager jailed for assaulting Israeli soldier

Mahmoud Abbas said that if the

A plea deal for Nariman Tamimi would also be for eight months in jail including time served, she said.

17-year-old Ahed has been arrested in December when two soldiers blocked the way of her home in the village of Nabi Saleh in the West Bank while she and her cousin approached them and started pushing them to move away. It includes a fine of about US$1,400 (S$1,840) and a three-year suspended sentence.

Ahed was convicted on four of the 12 charges against her including incitement, aggravated assault and two counts of obstructing Israeli soldiers. In exchange, the IDF's prosecution removed the other eight charges against her, including stone throwing and incitement to terror, her lawyer Gaby Lasky said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ahed's viral videotaped confrontation with the soldiers occurred outside her home hours after Israeli soldiers shot in the head and seriously injured her 15-year-old cousin Muhammad Fadel Tamimi. Her cousin, Nour, was fined 2,000 shekels and 16 days in jail. Palestinians, while showering Tamimi with praise, asked whether publicising the video might have been counterproductive, by showing the soldiers behaving with restraint, or helpful, by showing that even unarmed resistance can be effective.

Denied bail, she was tried behind closed doors in a military court. That's what justice looks like under the occupation's legal regime.

The arrest and confinement of minor Ahed awaiting trial in a military court blew up a intifada on social networks that were filled with petitions for release of minor under hashtag FreeAhed. Why were the actual terms of the plea bargain that Tamimi accepted omitted by most of the mainstream media?

Right-wing Israelis accuse Tamimi's family of using the white-skinned, blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl for propaganda stunts.

The Israeli military court where Ahed Tamimi was being tried accepted the deal between her and prosecutors in the case that has drawn worldwide attention.

"When they made a decision to keep her trial behind closed doors, we knew that we were not going to get a fair trial", Lasky told AFP in describing her reasons for seeking a plea bargain.

There was never any chance of a fair trial for Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teen's defense lawyer commented on Army Radio on Thursday morning.

Human Rights Watch also condemned the sentencing. Military prosecutors said her slapping and kicking was assault.

The ruling could have a chilling effect not just on journalists, but also on Palestinian activists who routinely record their encounters with Israeli troops, both to document abuses and to provide a measure of accountability. The Tamimi family are among villagers who fight for their land rights with Israeli settlers. The case of this young woman focused on look of different global human rights organizations in protection of children detained by Israel in Palestinian territories.
