Mecca Masjid blasts: All accused, including Aseemanand, acquitted

Mecca Masjid blast accused Swami Aseemanand

BJP National Spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao criticised Javed Akhtar on Twitter after the lyricist mocked the National Investigative Agency (NIA) over the Mecca Masjid case following a special court verdict acquitting all accused in lack of evidence. "The prosecution failed to prove allegations", said a counsel informing the media about the verdict. It may be mentioned that K Ravinder Reddy cited personal reasons while tendering his resignation.

A blast in the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad on May 18, 2007 had killed nine people and left 58 injured. The bomb had exploded in an area of the mosque where devotees performed ablutions. Later, five more people were killed in subsequent police firing on a crowd outside the mosque.

Apart from him, those acquitted are - Devendra Gupta, Lokesh Sharma, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar alias Bharat Bhai and Rajendra Chowdhary. Considering that Aseemanand and others have been acquitted, it still remains a mystery as to who was behind the blast.

You all may know that a group of Hindu extremists led by another RSS worker Sunil Joshi and he has died before the charge sheet was filed which is why his name wasn't on trial accused lists.

Investigation of the two other accused is continuing.

The judgment was pronounced in a heavily guarded, closed courtroom on the ground floor of the Nampally Criminal Complex. In all these years after the blast, more than 200 witnesses were examined by the court, and over 400 document was exhibited. So, do not rush to ascribe political motives if the accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case have walked free. The city police, which initially took up investigations, blamed Bangaldeshi terror outfit Harkatul Jihad Islami and rounded up about 100 Muslim youth. However, he was granted conditional bail in 2017.

Only one IED went off, the other was found wrapped in a T-shirt "Wasan's argument was that at best an inference could be drawn against the suspects but there was no corroboration..." the former NIA official said. A government that can not bring perpetrators of terror to justice doesn't augur well for any democracy. The acquittal in the case raises the spectre of a similar collapse in the trial in Samjhauta case, where the NIA itself admitted in its charge-sheet that it had no clue how the explosives were arranged for and how the highly sophisticated bombs were prepared. "The decision is to be taken at the headquarters' level". The cases were badly handled by the investigation agencies in such a manner that they ended up in acquittal. "Will it ensure that justice is done", he said.

This raises a bigger question mark on the efficacy of our investigation agencies where they have not been able to gather any concrete evidence for the prosecution in such cases.

The verdict has come as a shot in the arm for Hindutva outfits, which are now accusing the Congress of hounding Hindus.

"For its appeasement politics, the Congress targeted and defamed Hindus and the country for merely some votes". "There is no saffron terror threat in the country", Kumar told THE WEEK.
