The departure of WhatsApp's founder has 'potentially significant implications' for Facebook (FB)

Jan Koum co-founder and CEO of Whats App speaks at the WSJD Live conference in Laguna Beach California

WhatsApp will soon get upgraded with a group video calling feature, confirmed Facebook at its F8 Developer conference in San Jose, California.

According to Zuckerberg, about 2 billion minutes spent by users on personal calls in WhatsApp messenger, therefore it was chose to introduce the feature of group video calling. The clash over data took on additional significance in the wake of revelations in March that Facebook had allowed third parties to mishandle its users' personal information.Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg replied to Koum's post by crediting Koum with teaching him "about encryption and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people's hands".

"It is time for me to move on".

San Francisco: In a jolt to Facebook, WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum has made a decision to move on amid reports that he had a difference of opinion with parent company Facebook over data privacy, encryption and other issues.

"I'm leaving at a time when people are using WhatsApp in more ways than I could have imagined". It was at Ernst and Young that Koum met the fellow business partner and co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton.

WhatsApp, a pun on the phrase "What's up?", grew in popularity in part because its encrypted messages are stored on users' smartphones and not on company servers, making the service more private. And I'll still be cheering WhatsApp on - just from the outside. Koum sold WhatsApp to Facebook in 2014 for a jaw-dropping $19 billion. This data was allegedly used to attempt to influence voter opinion during the 2016 US Presidential elections.

However, Facebook already harvests some data from WhatsApp.

It is still unclear as to who will replace Koum as the new CEO of Whatsapp. Facebook's enormous profits, meanwhile, are powered nearly entirely by advertising targeted to its users' interests.

Brian Acton, the other Co-founder of WhatsApp, had left in November a year ago and openly supported the #DeleteFacebook movement too.
