President Trump weighs in on W. Va. Senate race

Kucinich and Cordray are top candidates in the Ohio Democratic primary for governor

Blankenship, meanwhile, is doubling down on his attacks against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and continues to defend his use of the term "China people".

Trump's opposition to Blankenship comes as West Virginia Republican insiders suggest that the recent spate of controversy surrounding the former coal mine owner has actually given him a bit of momentum heading into Tuesday's face-off against Rep. Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

Blankenship also said he had resurrected the GOP in West Virginia.

"Don Blankenship... can't win the General Election in your State", he tweeted.

The President adds his voice to the national Republicans who are anxious that Blankenship's upstart campaign could upend plans to run either Republican Rep. Evan Jenkins or Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who are seen as more electable, against vulnerable Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is considered one of the most vulnerable Democrats going into the general election this November. It's unclear, nevertheless, how powerful Mr. Trump's intervention will probably take a state where lots of ancient votes have been throw. And the coal baron's flagrant xenophobia - and habit of decrying Mitch McConnell as a cocaine dealer - means that the national Republican Party would likely do relatively little to boost Blankenship's candidacy.

Trump is citing Alabama Republican Roy Moore, who lost a special Senate election after allegations of past sexual misconduct.

"We all really like President Trump's policies but we know that he doesn't get things right", Blankenship said in a paid program on a community-access television station in West Virginia.

Following the president's tweet, Mr. Blankenship didn't try to distance himself from Mr. Trump, who remains wildly popular in West Virginia and won the state by more than 40 percentage points in the 2016 presidential election.

Blankenship campaign spokesman Greg Thomas said the candidate is "in the process" of filing the paperwork and has sent notification it would be late.

Blankenship pushed back at the Trumps for aligning with the "establishment", though he did claim his end goal is to promote the president's agenda.

For their part, both Mr. Morrisey and Mr. Jenkins clung to Mr. Trump's tweet. "No way! Remember Alabama or A.G. Morrisey". "I've never used a race word".

"No more fumbles like Alabama", he added. Trump wrote on Twitter.

In a debate last Wednesday, he defended his comments, saying that it was exactly like if someone had referred to him - Blankenship - as an "American-person". In the Democratic race, former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is leading, with an endorsement from Sen. Should the Mr. Blankenship however win despite the intervention it would be exceptionally uncomfortable to Mr. Trump.
