EU heads discuss bold-or-fold strategy toward Trump tariffs

Anadolu Agency Anadolu

Under Trump, the US has walked out of the global Paris climate deal, is threatening to impose punitive tariffs based on national security on an ally like the European Union, and has stirred Middle East politics by pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and moving the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Some EU leaders have made a direct link between the move and the killing of nearly 60 Palestinians during protests on the Gaza border.

"Looking at the latest decisions of President Trump, someone could even think: with friends like that, who needs enemies?"

Theresa May will travel to the Bulgarian capital where she will join a working dinner with her fellow European leaders, including European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

He added, "The EU and US are friends and partners".

Historic deal on Iran's nuclear program from 2015 provides for the removal of sanctions against Iran in exchange for limiting its opportunities for the enrichment and storage of nuclear materials.

European Union leaders will try to forge a united response at a summit on Wednesday to US President Donald Trump's shock decisions on the Iran nuclear deal and trade tariffs.

At meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Brussels on May 15, Britain, France, Germany vowed to keep the JCPOA alive despite the US withdrawal.

European diplomats have sought to play down expectations of Tuesday's meeting, stressing the enormous challenge of finding a way around United States sanctions punishing foreign businesses trading with Iran, which have global reach. Tusk told a news conference.

They backed plans to offer concessions if the United States gives Europe a permanent exemption from the tariffs, but added that the "EU will not negotiate with a gun at its head".

Major European countries share Trump's concerns, and the EU leaders on Wednesday agreed to seek ways to address them. But they argue that the nuclear deal is the way to stop the increasingly influential regional power from obtaining an atomic weapon.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel is calling for an worldwide investigation.

"If the JCPOA is supposed to continue, it was a good start and it has sent an important political message, but this is not the end of the work", Zarif said on his flight back to Tehran, according to state news agency IRNA.

They also agreed to "initiate work to protect European companies negatively affected by the U.S. decision", which involves Washington reimposing sanctions on the Iranian nuclear programme.

Their discussions on Iran will come a day after Tehran's foreign minister held talks in Brussels with his British, French and German counterparts in a bid to salvage the deal that Trump has pulled out of.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton indicated on Sunday that the USA would be willing to impose sanctions on any European companies that continue to work or do business with Iran. "The Iranian nation will resist the USA plots", Iranian news agencies quoted Rohani as saying.
