U.S. Gulf Coast braces for impact as Alberto approaches

Alberto disorganized no threat to local area Alberto remains very disorganized Sunday morning

Subtropical Storm Alberto continued its trek north-northeast overnight and is expected to make landfall in the northern Gulf Coast late Monday. Its expected to turn north Sunday morning, then north-northwest Monday night, moving at 13 miles per hour.

The projected storm track for Alberto has shifted eastward, according to reports, lessening the threat to oil production facilities in the Gulf of Mexico, but increasing the danger to northeastern Florida coastal areas.

It also maintains a storm surge watch along the US Gulf coast from Crystal River in western Florida to the Mississippi-Alabama border. Locally, more than 8 inches of rain is possible in parts of the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama and southwest Georgia.

For storm information specific to your area, including possible inland watches and warnings, please monitor products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast office.

TROPICAL STORM WARNING is still in effect for coastal areas in Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties until further notice. The main threat is from heavy rain that could lead to flooding, the city said, but also high winds and storm surge could cause problems.

Flood and flash-flood watches are spread across Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, where 4 to 7 inches (10 to 18 centimeters) of rain could fall through early next week and reach into South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee expected to be hit by Alberto's remnants, the National Weather Service said.

Governors in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama on Saturday declared states of emergency. The storm could clip Apalachicola the night before.

Maximum sustained winds are near 65 miles per hour (100 km/h) with higher gusts.

Heavy rain and tropical storm conditions are likely to reach the northern Gulf Coast well ahead of the center of the large storm system.

There were a number of deadly hurricanes in the United States and Caribbean past year that walloped places including Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage, massive power outages and devastation to hundreds of thousands of structures. Elsewhere, for the Piedmont and most of the Triad, expect partly sunny skies and muggy conditions with highs in the low to mid 80s.

Storms in the Gulf are closely watched because 5 percent of USA natural gas and 17 percent of crude-oil production comes out of the region, according to the Energy Information Administration.

"Do not think that only areas in the cone will be impacted - everyone in our state must be prepared", Scott said in a statement.
