Sarfraz surprised but proud as Pakistan hammer England

Colin Graves ECB chairman

It would be England's only wicket as Pakistan knocked off the required runs easily - Haris Sohail (39no) taking a particular liking to Bess' bowling, with the Somerset off-spinner plundered for 29 runs in 3.4 overs - to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

Pakistan's Imam-ul-Haq was forced from the field during his side's crushing Test win against England after copping a painful blow to his private parts.

What made this latest reverse all the more embarrassing for England is that they are traditionally tough to beat at home in May, with many touring sides struggling to adjust when typically English conditions - overcast skies and green-tinged pitches - are at their most pronounced.

England failed to make the positive start they wanted following their heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and a rare series loss in New Zealand.

The all-rounder also became one of the most experienced players in the T20 format, playing 230 matches in the short format, and featuring for many different teams around the world, including both Surrey and Kent in England. Ten balls later, Mark Wood feathered a catch behind to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed off Mohammad Amir for 4, and Stuart Broad (0) did the same the next over off Abbas.

England were thrashed by nine wickets in the opening Test at Lord's and have not won in eight Tests. However, International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined the skipper Sarfraz Ahmed 60 percent of his match fee for maintaining the slow over-rate during the Test match.

Abbas went on to reveal that his eyes are set on the next match, and he will be doing all he can to help the Men in Green win the series.

Amir, whose career nearly came to a complete end at Lord's back in 2010 after he received a jail sentence and five-year ban from cricket for his involvement in a spot-fixing scandal during a corresponding Test against England, had taken two wickets for no runs in three balls. "I knew it was going to be a pretty big task as the spinner first up, but if you look at (Shadab) Khan's figures from the first innings, he bowled six overs for 34".

Babar, who top-scored with 68 before retiring hurt on Friday having been hit by a Stokes delivery, was unable to bat again after scans confirmed he had suffered a broken forearm which will rule him out of next week's second Test at Headingley. "A lot of the things that we do are very good". "But ultimately we have just got to be better", he said after the match.

Buttler, fresh back from the Indian Premier League for this NatWest Series opener after 18 months out of the Test reckoning, joined forces in the unlikeliest of circumstances with debutant number eight Bess to give England hope where there was none.

"The way the bowlers did a job for us was great".

"We have a very inexperienced team but we are very confident in our players".
