Syria's Assad threatens to attack area under US-backed Kurds

That includes large parts of the north and east where US special forces deployed during the fight against Islamic State, supporting the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Jordan is confident that Russian Federation will not allow President Bashar al-Assad's government to wreck a ceasefire in southern Syria, a Jordanian official said on Monday, days after Washington said it feared that the Syrian government plans an offensive there.

In the interview, Assad said USA and Russian forces would have come in direct conflict long ago in Syria if it were not for Russia's prudence and judgment. "We always said that we have Iranian officers, but they work with our army, we don't have [Iranian] troops".

"We're going to deal with it by two options: the first one we started now opening doors for negotiations, because the majority of them [SDF] are Syrians".

"If not, we're going to resort.to liberating those areas by force".

The southwest is one of the big chunks of territory that still remains outside the control of the Syrian government, which has recovered swathes of territory with the support of the Russian military and Iran-backed Shi'ite militias.

The report comes after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced Monday that the Syrian army should be the only force on the southern border of the country. "We are taking from them reassurances that the southern region is subjected to the de-escalation agreement and ceasefire", he said. He would either be killed by ISIS, forced to abdicate under pressure from foreign governments or his own people would hang him in the public square.

U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said on April 30 the United States and its allies would not want to pull troops out of Syria before diplomats win the peace.

"They're definitely looking to establish an arrangement", said Yury Barmin, an analyst of Russian policy in the Middle East at the Russian International Affairs Council in Moscow.

Assad reiterated the government's denial that it carried out the attack in the eastern Ghouta town of Douma, saying that the government did not have chemical weapons and it would not have been in its interest to carry out such a strike.

Though it rarely takes credit for the strikes, Israel is believed to have struck dozens of times in Syria in recent years against Iranian military hardware in Syria and shipments of weapons intended for delivery to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Striking targets in Syria and threatening to assassinate the leader on the pretext of fighting Iranian influence is a sign that Israel is in "panic" after losing its "dear" terrorist assets, President Bashar Assad told RT.

Israel and Iran have been at loggerheads since US President Donald Trump controversially backed out of the Iranian nuclear earlier this month.

The three countries remain parties to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and are scrambling to save the deal's framework.
