Bryson DeChambeau survives playoff to win the Memorial Tournament

19-year-old from Chile besting big names at the Memorial

Bryson DeChambeau finished off a 6-under-par 66 with birdies on two of the toughest holes, giving him a one-shot lead going into a final round at a Memorial that features Tiger Woods in the mix at Muirfield Village for the first time in six years.

DeChambeau three-putted for bogey on the 18th for a 1-under 71 to get into a three-way playoff at Muirfield Village.

He is contesting just a fifth US PGA Tour event since turning pro straight after the Masters in April, and the Santiago-born teenager said he will draw on his amateur successes as he tries to win on Sunday, when the field will tee off early from the first and 10th tee as organizers try to beat expected inclement weather. Stanley was eliminated after a bogey at the first extra hole. Woods ran his 45-foot birdie putt about 7 feet by on the par-3 16th and missed it coming back, and then closed by missing a 3-foot par putt.

Patrick Cantlay made two eagles, including a hole-in-one. But on the par-5 No. 11, Woods holed out an eagle that sent the crowd into absolute hysterics.

Woods, seeking his first win since 2013, had two birdies in his first five but endured further frustration with his putter, then drove out of bounds at the 13th and went on to finish in a tie for 23rd with Scotland's Martin Laird on nine under.

"I've had little building blocks along the way, and I keep getting a little bit better, a little bit more refined, and you see the results", Woods said.

DeChambeau failed to take advantage, however, three-putting from 55 feet to fall into the three-way playoff.

Byeong Hun An played bogey-free for a 69 and was two shots behind, while Justin Rose dropped two shots over the last three holes for a 69 and was four back.

"I had some chances to shoot some good rounds this week", he said, per the Golf Channel's Tiger Tracker.

His skills were on display again on Friday, during the second round of the Memorial Tournament.

Entering the week, Woods was sixth on Tour this season in third round scoring and 59 in terms of the final round. "I played really, really well - played beautifully, actually had control of what I was doing out there - I just didn't finish it off". An hit a remarkable flop shot to within a few feet, meaning he would nearly certainly make par.

Meanwhile Jason Day fell out of contention after a hard, third-round 74 that left him tied-28.

Former world No.1 Day double-bogeyed the 18th on Saturday to shoot 74 and fall back to six under, one shot ahead of Marc Leishman after the Victorian carded a 67.
