Serena, Sharapova renew rivalry in Paris

Serena Williams’ Nike Bodysuit Was the Real Winner at the French Open

In this combination of file photographs created on June 3, 2018, Russia´s Maria Sharapova (L) plays a forehand return to Netherland´s Richel Hogenkamp during their women´s singles first round match at French Open on May 29, 2018 and (R) Serena Williams of the United States plays a backhand return to Germany´s Julia Goerges during their women´s singles third round match on June 2, 2018.

Williams, the champion in 2002, 2013 and 2015 and playing her first Slam since giving birth to her daughter in September, last played a major at the Australian Open in 2017 while two months pregnant.

Maybe the end of Williams's road will come Monday afternoon, when she faces longtime foe and five-time Grand Slam victor Maria Sharapova in a fourth-round match as intriguing as tennis fans could hope for.

Serena Williams produced the best performance of her Grand Slam comeback to beat 11th-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany 6-3, 6-4 and reach the French Open's fourth round.

The three-time victor was facing an early exit in her first Slam since the 2017 Australian Open when she trailed Ashleigh Barty by a set and a break, but dragged herself back into form in trademark fashion to progress.

Williams, a 23-time Slam champion, has won 19 of their 21 previous meetings on tour - both of Sharapova's wins coming back in 2004. When asked about the tie with Serena, Sharapova said, "I think anytime you play against Serena you know what you're up against".

"I think this is just one of her best surfaces, and she always does really, really well here". "I'm just going to go out there and enjoy myself".

Five games after she broke for a 3-1 lead with a blazing crosscourt victor, Williams belted the furry yellow ball with so much fury into Goerges's half of the court that it rebounded high into the stands.

Williams had played only four matches since taking time off due to pregnancy before arriving at Roland Garros.

Sharapova hasn't defeated Williams in 14 years and is frank when it comes to discussing the reasons behind that drought.

"She's probably a favourite in this match", Williams said.

"And then the book was a lot about me".

"If I didn't play my best tennis, I realised that it would be very hard", she said. And now I'm playing, which is insane.

In the first set, The American broke to lead 3-1 thanks to a cross-court victor going on to wrap up the opening set 6-3.

Garbine Muguruza is also safely through to the fourth round after destroying Australia's Sam Stosur 6-0, 6-2 in one and three minutes. The world number one's record at Roland Garros now stands at 82 wins and just two losses. "I managed to stay aggressive and I played smart as well", said Sharapova, who delighted a half-full stadium by thanking them for their support in French.

Sharapova advanced Saturday with a similarly lopsided win hours earlier, beating 2016 U.S. Open runner-up Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 6-1. The following year she beat her sister Venus in the Australian Open final, carrying her recently conceived baby.

Estonian 25th seed Anett Kontaveit made the last 16 for the first time by downing Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova who saw her 13-match win streak end in a horror show of 57 unforced errors.
