Trump accuses Justin Trudeau of making 'false statements'

"The nations of the G7 are bound together by shared values and beliefs", Trump said.

But even before the G7 summit began, the U.S. and other participants were on a collision course on a number of issues. If we're unable to make a deal, we will be better off.

'We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies, ' the leaders said in a statement after a meeting that focused heavily on trade fights between the United States and its allies. European union treats us very unfairly.

Canada is now adding the tariffs to its list of deal breakers on NAFTA.

'I think there are various discussions about alternatives that would not be that, and that would not be entirely destabilizing for a trade deal, and I think we are open to creativity, ' he said.

Trump, who repeated that his tariffs are meant to protect United States industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition, told reporters he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated.

Apart from trade, there also was disagreement at the summit over the G7's position on climate change and Trump's suggestion that Russian Federation be re-admitted to the group.

This year's summit, however, comes at a time of increasing tensions. All three trading partners have threatened to retaliate with their own levies against USA imports. Merkel said on Saturday there must first be progress on a Ukraine peace plan before there is any talk about readmitting Moscow.

On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sniped about "stragglers" after Trump was late to a breakfast session on gender equality. Canada issued its own threat of tariffs, which don't go into effect until July.

Other outstanding issues apparently remain, such as Chapter 19, which sets out dispute settlement panels for anti-dumping and countervailing duties that Canada and Mexico want kept in the deal but that the us wants kept out.

That leaves Trump diametrically opposed with Canada, which says renegotiating the deal every five years would create perpetual uncertainty and harm long-term investment.

"He is very seriously contemplating kind of a shift in the NAFTA negotiations".

"There are disagreements", Kudlow said. I may have had a much different attitude.

Until recently, Trump had good diplomatic relationships with Macron and Trudeau, but those connections appear to have soured in the past few weeks amid the tariffs controversy. Since then, his administration has threatened to sanction other countries doing business with Iran, including those signatories and putting the deal further in jeopardy.

French President Emmanuel Macron responded in a "courteous but very firm tone" to present the European side of the story, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe chimed in as well, the official said.

But what is the G7, and why is the outlook for this year's meeting so glum?

So at the G7 in Charlevoix, Quebec on Friday, some were speculating whether when he shook Trump's hand with a grip so firm the U.S leader was left with white marks, he was showing how he really felt. Awkward handshakes are nothing new for Trump, just ask British Prime Minister Theresa May, Supreme Court Judge Neil Gorsuch and many more.
