Obama-Era Net Neutrality Rules Officially Repealed

Net neutrality dead in US Top gloomy predictions of internet’s near future

"Plain and simple, thanks to the FCC's rollback of net neutrality, internet providers have the legal green light, the technical ability, and business incentive to discriminate and manipulate what we see, read, and learn online", said Jessica Rosenworcel, FCC commissioner, in a statement Monday.

In a press release Monday, the FCC said the repeal does away with "unnecessary, heavy-handed regulations" and replaces them with "common-sense regulations that will promote investment and broadband deployment". "The consumer is going to be protected and we preserve the incentive for companies to build out better, faster, and cheaper internet access".

"The American people know they can not trust their internet service providers to do the right thing and protect a free and open internet unless there are strict rules in place", Sen.

Most notably, the repeal removes the Title II classification of broadband internet that put it in line with essential utilities like electricity. "Under that approach, the Internet was open and free", he wrote.

Until now, anyone who uses any website has grown accustomed to a certain level of speed and service. The new rules give the Federal Trade Commission the authority to police the broadband industry, which he says is better equipped to protect an open internet.

Though the FCC voted to kill net neutrality last December, the formal repeal didn't take effect until today.

As of Monday morning, net neutrality no longer exists.

OR also enacted a net neutrality law, signed in April and that goes into action in 2019, but it only restricts state agencies and other public bodies from contracting with network providers that don't meet non-discriminatory provisions.

Net Neutrality Ends Tomorrow, FCC On Track To Remove Rules As Scheduled

But supporters of net neutrality-such as big tech companies like Google and Facebook, as well as consumer groups and pioneers of the internet like World Wide Web creator Tim Berners-Lee-say the internet as we know it may not exist without these protections.

To take a classic example, this means Comcast couldn't just choose to slow down a service like Netflix to make its own streaming video service more competitive, nor could it try to squeeze Netflix to pay more money to be part of a so-called internet fast lane.

And Democrats are championing the Markey bill, which passed the Senate with the help of three Republicans last month.

The new order permits ISPs to throttle, block, or be paid to prioritize certain sites or content, as long as they disclose that they are doing so.

In May, the Senate voted to overturn the FCC's repeal of the Obama-era regulations.

Pai, who is a former attorney for Verizon, doubled down on his stance that repealing net neutrality rules was the right call.

There are two main schools of thought as to how the end of net neutrality will affect everyday internet users.
